RAF Wormingford (Station 159)
RAF Wormingford, near Colchester in Essex, was originally slated as a base for USAAF 8th Air Force bombers and construction was started as such before it was declared surplus to requirements and instead became a pure fighter station for the duration of World War 2.
Retaining the standard layout of most East Anglian WW2 airfields, the base was originally occupied by the P-47D Thunderbolts of the 362nd Fighter Group. When they moved to the Forward Landing Ground at Headcorn in 1944, the 55th Fighter Group moved in, operating P-38 Lightnings and later P-51 Mustangs.
At the end of the war, Wormingford was returned to agriculture and little remains of the base are visible beyond the basic layout. Part of the reason for this is that there were actually few buildings around the airbase itself, with the accommodation and support areas located around surrounding villages.
Download links can be found under the "Version History" section, below. The scenery has been tested using FSX Deluxe with Acceleration on Windows XP SP3 (DX9) and FSX Deluxe with SP2 on Windows Vista SP1 (DX10).
Some screenshots of this scenery contain the P-47D Thunderbolt commercial add-on by A2A Simulations. The latest "Wings of Power 3" aircraft includes a 362nd FG repaint as part of the base pack - which is why I built this airfield!
Thanks to Nick Churchill from screenshotartist.co.uk for the following shots.
Please note that these screenshots have been taken using a variety off add-ons as both my and Nick's installation of FSX are far from standard. The buildings will look the same on any installation, but the ground textures, roads, railways and clouds may vary depending on what add-ons you have installed.
