Gremlin Gripes

Posted on 27th September 2024 by IanP

If you have looked at flightsim.to recently, you’ll have seen that I have updated HMS Tern/ RNAS Twatt to fix a couple of problems and reesolve some of the changes required from the recently MSFS UK and Ireland World Update.

Unfortunately, I can’t get into the back end of the website to upload it here at this point in time. It – and the other files that need updated – are still intended to be uploaded via here. In the interim, however, they can be downloaded here: https://flightsim.to/profile/Amarillon/uploads.

As soon as the Gremlin in the security system has been vanquished with a can of digital WD40 and a pointy screwdriver, I’ll put them here, as well.

Blimey. It’s a post.

Right. You might have seen the Tweet, you might not, but this place is now showing no red alerts and no yellow “issues” again on the dashboard panels. That took some minor fiddling in the background to achieve.

Apologies for the new Cookie Permissions / Personal Data bar – as if trying to keep track of US and EU law wasn’t hard enough, a couple of US states have decided that if I want to exist, I have to obey their law as well, or else. It just means you need to accept a new pop-up. Sorry.

Now I guess that I can go back to trying to convert my entire objects library to PBR-like materials for MSFS, which is what I’ve been doing. 140 down, far too many more to go.

“Wot I Did On My Oliday”

“Wot I Did On My Oliday”

Or, “That moment you pick something up and decide to model it, then don’t stop”. Or something. Then you get depressed for absolutely no apparent reason.

A Slight Northern Detour

A Slight Northern Detour

I took a quick (socially distant, of course – just pretend it’s Barnard Castle) trip up pretty much the entirety of the UK from Boxted this evening, after finding some far better images than I had before for the joint Watch Office and Ops Room structure, still standing at “The-Place-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named“.

Not finished yet (let alone textured), but…

Don’t Tell the Crew Chief!

Posted on 18th January 2021 by IanP

While I’m poking at Boxted and finding everything wrong with it that’s left to fix (I just decided that Montford Bridge needs a complete rebuild as well…), I figured that I’d post this one – evidence that I’m as bad at breaking DCS World WW2 fighters as I am P3D ones…

“Umm, sorry control. I broke my landing gear, overspeeding it on downwind.”

Quick update

Posted on 17th January 202117th January 2021 by IanP

Right. My mental health is really not coping well with the current situation – the last few days have been completely messed up between that and my knackered back so absolutely nothing has been done.

Thanks to watching too many Dreamsofwings videos, this evening, though, a bit of light has crept into my brain cells and little bit of progress has been made. Not much, but it’s a heck of a lot more than recent weeks!

Ah… Blutions!

Posted on 5th December 2020 by IanP

I nearly entitled this blog entry “Battle of the Bogs”, but it wouldn’t be entirely accurate, as the problem I’m having right now isn’t the lavatories – I’ve got them (everywhere…) – it’s the washing, brushing and showering bits – in military parlance, the “ablutions”.

Halfpenny Green: The Saga Continues

Halfpenny Green: The Saga Continues

I can’t actually remember how many years ago it was that I first created the Post Office building (the tiny 20×10 TB Building next to the main entrance) for my then local airfield, but it was a fair few. Put it this way, it was in GMax.

Over time, I added “things to represent” the buildings of the aerodrome site, as the default versions in sims tend to be so bad, then at some point, I went over the road as well and started adding Ted Andrews 20ft TB blocks everywhere there as well. By this point, I had also started taking my own photographs of the site and, well, let’s just say it spiralled somewhat out of control!

A Very Quick HG Update

Posted on 27th October 2020 by IanP

Things aren’t quite as bad as I feared with my never-ending rendition of the 1940s RAF Halfpenny Green (EGBO).

I’ve managed to resurrect the “master” Blender file, which had all but 89 buildings on it. That sounds a lot, but out of 269, it means that 180 were there. Every single material and texture in the master was broken, but a few hours later, that’s both fixed and rather improved, with one single material now applied to any building that uses a common texture sheet.

The missing building count is now down 26, to 63. Some of those are modelled, it’s just that they’re not on the “master” yet. About a dozen of them I have no idea what they looked like anyway, so educated guesswork is required for those.

If anyone is reading this… Send tea and chocolate. I need it!

Oops #1,457,302

Posted on 26th October 2020 by IanP

Before I say anything else, I think that yes, I’ll be finishing off at least the current two projects with the FSX SDK and uploading them using that. If someone fancies testing my stuff in P3Dv5, let me know how badly it’s broken when I’ve uploaded it, please?

Now onto the whoopsie… I’ve *REALLY* broken Halfpenny Green. It’s not there at all right now and the Blender tools won’t let me recompile it.

I’m working on it. If you hear loud swearing coming from a Northern-Ireland-ish direction, it’s probably me.
